HOW DID THIS BAND HAPPEN?
(Now for a long and boring history...)
Originally a band formed in Hamilton, Ohio in June 2004 called "The Inner Darkness", the original goal of founding members ROBBY SAGER, Josh Goodpaster, Trevor Hobbs, Adam Meyer and Brian Lynch was to bring Ska, Rock, Emotive Hardcore and Pop-Punk all together into a BIG brassy explosion... the result was a fun band that had a lot of music but no voice to connect to the audience and the group only played 3 shows in 2005... In 2006 the band disbanded due to members pursuing other ventures such as that whole higher education thing... April 2007 would see the reformation of the original plan come together when Robby took after the likes of Jeff Rosenstock's project Bomb The Music Industry and began writing songs with no intention of getting other musicians to play them. In June 2007 Mitch Jones (Formerly of local Metal Band "She Saw Death"/"Bodies Below") joined on drums and Louis Matza on Saxophone. The tenative name of this project was Robomat Jones... Frustrating musical differences and schedule conflicts meant the end of that short lived line-up and Robby was on his own again. In 3 days in August of 2007 Robby rerecorded 15 songs (Every instrument performed by himself) that he had written in the last 2 years, stuck it on a disc and called it "The Future Isn't What It Used to be"... He burned 80 CDs, grabbed an acoustic and left for Cleveland to perform guerilla style outside of the mother of all ska shows "Shout it Loud" tour (feat. Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake) at the Agora ballroom to a crowd of about 3. The next day in Cincinnati he did the same outside of Bogarts for quite a few more... and then again that Saturday in Columbus. In September Robby played solo except this time with a laptop with Ska-Core giants The Flaming Tsunamis, Matt Wixson and The Best Revenge. In October MITCH JONES returned to the band to play drums. ADAM MEYER joined again on trumpet and this time backup vocals! Corey Montgomery and Nick Shope from "All Alliteration Aside" joined on guitar and bass respectively. This line-up was deemed Robby Sager and the Skatomic Potato after witnessing a baked potato explode while listening to "Please Don't Bend" by Desmond Dekker. Shortly after deciding on a name another addition was made, BEN VANDERPOOL joined on trombone and trumpet, the line-up seemed perfect but seeing as Nick and Corey lived 35 miles away from the rest of the band they left on good terms but the band's future was looking really shaky. In the darkest hour came the missing piece to the puzzle when Max Moon was invited to a jam session. Mitch moved from his position on drums and learned all of the songs on bass in almost one practice and something was definitely right. The band was clicking... Atomic Potato's first show took place at The Parkland Theater in Cleves, Ohio. Since that show things have skyrocketed. They recorded a demo CD in one day called "School Spirit" and have been giving it out for free at shows.
Recent update - Max Moon quit drums to pursue ventures in Metal and religion. Wade Knight is now playing drums in his stead.
