Post punk is kind of an ambiguous term when describing a band. It can be a positive thing or it can be negative. You could mean that the band is blatantly ripping off Joy Division and Gang of Four, or you could mean that the band is pushing boundaries and doing their own thing. Voyageur certainly rides the line between being freshness and idol worship. There are hints of Interpol and other bands that are looking to cash in on the latest post punk buzz . But Voyageur’s songs branch off in totally different and unique ways. Whether it’s that the songs are more spacey or that these guys actually know how to right songs that aren’t boring, I could certainly see Voyageur being popular.

What makes the band even more intriguing is the fact that their songs can be difficult to digest. The shortest track is 4 minutes, which could be a barrier to some fans being able to get into their music. Intentional or not, this self titled disc also has a few surprises. As well, Voyageur somehow manages to (unnecessarily at times) make small nuanced references to other bands in their songs: American Steel, Alkaline Trio, and some 90’s emo.

However, it’s all good. This disc captures Voyageur at a time when a listener might feel that they are trying to find their groove, and I don’t think that is too far from the truth. But one thing that the band should be proud of is that they refuse to subject to cliché and to decide that it would be cool to dress in black suits and be the next Interpol. The world needs more Voyageur’s and less Gang of Four copycats. Voyageur’s creativity and willingness to open up musically is a breath of fresh air in the current climate of the standard two and a half minute pop song, and the more pedals the better!
