Hardcore punk rock is predictable. While good bands have emerged from this scene over the years, nothing all that new or groundbreaking has been produced since the 1980’s when the sound was still something innovative. It seems that anything new is either straight-edged hypocritical rhetoric infused into an angst filled group of outcasts or it is an agenda of hate and violence delivered through a rebellious punk rock medium. Positivism is the last sentiment to ever be expected in such a genre, which is why the latest disc of demos from local hardcore act John Walsh is nothing short of brilliant. Instead of pumping your fists into the pit for the sake of pounding on your punk rock brethren, front man Mike Ingram will have you pumping high-fives into the air and screaming warm fuzzies at the top of your lungs.
I had my first introduction to John Walsh a little over a year ago via MySpace. The only song I took the time to listen to was a positive-laced parody of the classic Misfits’ tune, "Attitude". It was fun. It was novel. It was something I wrote off. I never would have guessed this concept was anything more than a short-lived attempt at being humorous. Now with a fresh six-song offering of demos, I realize that I could not have been more wrong. This is not a novelty. This is straight-ahead hardcore punk rock done incredibly well. The vocals have the control of a younger Davey Havok and the energy of hardcore greats such as Ian MacKaye and Keith Morris. While the music fits the mold of most hardcore punk acts, it is executed with complete competency and urgency. This is not a group of musicians playing a style of music merely because it was easier than actually learning their instruments. They know what they are doing and know how to make you believe in their message.
“I’m in love with feeling great,” and now I am in love with John Walsh. If you read CincyPunk because you love good punk rock, then you need to make it out to one of the many local shows John Walsh will be playing and pick up this demo. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
