When I heard that Joe Frankl, Erik ZDP, and Casey Weissbuch were putting together a band I only assumed (though quite unfairly) that the band would be a ska/punk band and I was ready to write them off almost from the start. I am certainly glad I did not. These guys play nothing close to ska, the bass is loud, the guitars are sharp and the drumming is fantastic. Not to mention that this EP captures the band at it’s best, with four separate songs that burst with energy. The music is post punkish with driving guitars and the commanding vocals of Joe Frankl (Who knew he could yell? I hear a bit of the Suicide Machines in his voice) and Erik does his absolute best yelling his heart out, but he’s proven himself with his work in Forest Fire and a couple of other local bands.
This band is very different from the other things these dudes have done before. Even though the drumming is insanely awesome as always (Casey is probably THE best drummer in our city, even though he no longer lives here all year round) what really caught my eye on this EP were the guitars. They poke out of the wall of sound every once in a while and really catch you by surprise, the rhythm guitar is nothing too special, but when Joe starts riffing you know something great is happening. The band combines melody with power without interrupting the flow of the EP, and it doesn't mean that in between breakdowns the band croons; there is a quite a difference between "Full Gulp Pulls" (a song that comes out rocking right from the start) and "Older Foxes" (a more restrained punk track).
Sadly the lyrics aren't as good as the music, but this IS the band’s first recording and only a demo at that. The recording quality is quite good, but I bet that Till Plains would sound that much more amazing if they weren’t as rushed in recording these songs as they were at the time. This band is killer, only time will tell if they can live up to these recordings with a live show that matches its intensity and technical prowess.
to tom: This EP was written
to tom: This EP was written and recorded in a frantic two week period in August before Casey and I had to go to school. We have more songs, but haven't been able to record them!
Good to hear
It was a disguised compliment. I was getting into it for 9 minutes and then it ended. Send me stuff as you get it, as long as it has no naughty words in it, I can play it on WAIF
This Rules
But it's too short.
