When a band starts out, more times than most they tend to sound like a band that they admire. I’m more than sure The Wonder Years started out sounding like early New Found Glory. Not that that’s a bad thing, in fact I’m a huge fan of the burgeoning “poppy hardcore” genre that has been headed by Californians Set Your Goals.  When I first listened to “Get Stoked On It!”, I couldn’t help but feel that this record, sonically speaking, is more exciting and energetic than anything that Set Your Goals have put out. The Wonder Years lack the two vocalist attack that really defines SYG’s sound, and sound a bit more like New Found Glory’s vocalist: Jordan Pundik.

This album is some of the catchiest stuff I have heard all year. But there’s one problem: the lyrics.  I understand that The Wonder Years are trying to create lyrics with as much exuberance as their music, but that doesn’t mean that there needs to be lyrics about “eating toothpaste”, “cursing in Spanish”, and “my boy: Captain Crunch”.  If anything, the first three tracks are pure genius, and I even found myself singing along to the most absurd lyrics I have heard in a while.  Of the all guest vocals contributed to this album, Rachel from Zoloft the Rock and Roll Destroyer’s contribution to “Zombies are the New Black” takes the cake. But if I had to choose a favorite track it would have to be The Wonder Years ode to astronaut Buzz Aldrin, with the catchy repeating of “Wouldn’t it be cool if we were astronauts?”. Yes it would boys, yes it would.

There is already a band

There is already a band called the wonder years, but I think they spelled it "the wunder years." Members of the ghost.
