Often when it is time to go get my 90 or so downloads for the month from emusic I usually have about one or two must haves waiting and then I am left to go explore new bands in order to fill my quota for the month or risk losing my downloads for the month.
This usually leads to pleasant surprises, and a couple of months ago I happened across this band Cloak/Dagger, I forget how, it could have been recommended based on my purchasing history or derived musical tastes. So I downloaded it and decided to give it a shot after reading a couple of customer reviews and listening to the samples.
Within seconds I understood the comparison to the Hot Snakes, the guitar work is frantic and unconventional by today's standards. The rhythm section provides a furious foundation for the guitars to dance on top of while vocalist Jason Mazolla is desperately trying to get his message out.
I suspect this band would be at home playing with the Doomriders or even our hometown heroes Death In Graceland or even Caterpillar Tracks.
Where they deviate from the Hot Snakes comparison at least on this album is in
the pace. The Hot Snakes have a few more tricks up their sleeves
musically. Whereas Cloak/Dagger prefer to keep the pace in the red. It
just doesn't let up, so if you are driving and need to get there fast
or you're out of caffeine, pop this in and put it on repeat.
It's an admirable debut, and hopefully shows promise of things to come.
This record is amazing.
